[00:00:00] Welcome to Less Messin Minutes. I'm Jenny, your gentle guide to Tiny Doable Decluttering. Each episode we tackle one small thing together, a drawer, a shelf, a bag, and I walk you through what I'm doing in real time. No pressure, no perfection. Just a few minutes that help your home feel lighter. So grab something to tidy or just listen along and let's make a little progress together.
Okay?
Today I'm decluttering our main bathroom. Um, so we have two bathrooms in our house. One is the main bathroom in the hallway and then the other one, and that's a full bath. So, you know, tub, toilet, um. Shower sink. And then there's a bathroom attached to my bedroom that is like, I guess you would call it a three quarter bath.
It has the, um, toilet sink and then a really small shower. It's a super small bathroom. Actually the main bathroom's pretty small [00:01:00] too. so a couple months ago in the membership that I run, the Less Mess Express, we decluttered bathrooms. And during that one, I decluttered. The bathroom that's off my bedroom.
for tonight I'm going to declutter the main bathroom. Now the, the shower in the bathroom that is attached to my bedroom has been out of commission for quite a while. It's got a leak, whatever, you know, I just, I need to get it fixed, but I kind of wanna just overhaul that whole bathroom. So I've been putting it off.
Um, so everybody uses the shower in the main bathroom. What's crazy is the shower area in here itself is in really good shape. There's not extra products or anything. Um, what is a mess is under the sink. And then. On top of the sink. And then, um, I didn't think it was gonna be bad, but the medicine cabinet area is, needs some work.
Um, so I'm gonna start with the area that I consider the [00:02:00] easiest, and that is under the sink. So what I'm gonna do is just take everything out and as I'm doing it, I'm kind of grouping by type. So under the sink in this bathroom is really just for extra products. Um, we do keep the, trash can in there under the sink just because, um, we used to have, before she passed away, we had a dog that.
Love to get in the trash. So it was just easier to keep the trash can in, in the sink. like I said, what we have under here is extra products. So shampoos, conditioners, there's a thing of dog shampoo. the trash can that is overflowing, so I'll pull that out. And I'll tell you the reason that I wanted to tackle this space is because, um, I happened to look under here the other day before I went to Target to see if I needed like extra shampoo and conditioner.
[00:03:00] And I noticed in the very back corner we had four rolls of toilet paper. I don't think I realized that we had extra rolls of toilet paper in the bathroom here. So I thought, you know what? It would be a really good time to just give this a clean out.
Also have a candle or a half burned candle, I guess a, what do you call 'em? The Mr. Clean, like scrub things. Magic eraser, sometimes my mind fails me. Um, and then a, a whole thing of like. Wipes, hand wipes or baby wipes that you could just, you know, you use for wiping your hands.
And honestly, we don't need any of these in here and they don't need to be in the bathroom. ' I'm gonna just, I'm gonna get all of those out of the way. Some of these are so old, I can just feel that they are like dried up, not even any good. but for now, I'll just put 'em to the side.
And then actually, the wipes were in a little plastic like bin and I just, when I pulled those [00:04:00] out, I decided to just put the toilet paper in there. That way They are you know, they won't be behind the trash can, they'll be a lot easier to, to reach and to know that they're there.
We also have a. electric toothbrush. I have no idea who that belongs to. I mean, it must be one of my kids. I didn't know either of them had an electric toothbrush, so I will have to ask them about that. Now when you're doing a space like a bathroom, you can always break things down, into like a smaller area.
So if you didn't wanna do the entire bathroom, which to be quite honest, I don't know that I'm gonna do the whole bathroom tonight. I may not do the medicine cabinet. you know, just based on your energy, your, the amount of time you have, just kind of how you're feeling, you don't have to do the whole thing.
I'm gonna give it my best. We'll just see how it goes. We have got a ton of shampoo and conditioner bottles in here. there is one shampoo for the dog, There are seven [00:05:00] bottles of shampoo or conditioner. And then, oh wait, no, here's another one. So that's eight. And then three things of body wash. we all kinda, you know, have the things that we like and I am sure. That. I mean, there are things here that nobody's gonna use, nobody has been using, I'm gonna put those off to the side.
So of the. variety of containers, um, you know, of bottles of shampoo, conditioner, body wash, whatever. I'm only keeping 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. And that is the stuff that we actually use. And one of those is actually what belongs to the dog or what we use for the dog. So I am getting rid of two things of body wash that we're not gonna use.
And then, let's see. Three bottles of shampoo, two bottles of conditioner. Oh, and here's one more body wash. So three total body washes are leaving, [00:06:00] and then five things of shampoo or conditioner.
My philosophy is we're not using it. We haven't been using it. There's no need to keep it. It's just taking up space and in a small bathroom, it just, it just doesn't make sense to keep it.
Okay, so now I've put the stuff back in. Um, the cabinet just to get it out of the way. I will end up pulling it back out, um, I think to give it a wipe down, but for now I just needed it out of the way since it's such a small space in here. So that's fine. No big deal.
All right. Now I'm gonna move to, the top of the sink. and see what we can get rid of in here. so just to give you an idea of what we've got, besides toothbrushes and toothpaste, hairbrush. There is hair product, there is like face wash, stuff like that. each of [00:07:00] my boys have a water pick.
One of them is broken, so probably need to just go ahead and pitch that. I do wanna make sure that it can't be fixed. as I'm taking stuff off of the top of the sink, I'm actually just using the, the toilet, um, to put some stuff. getting things out of the way.
A couple things that are empty, like an air freshener. I'll just go ahead and pitch.
so I'm keeping the, as I, as I move stuff sort of out of the way so that I can clean up this sink, um, I am keeping like the hair stuff together, the face stuff together, the, the, dental products together, things like that.
More little trash items.
There's a Tumblr mug, another, like hair product, and then we just have a couple random cups in here, so I'm not sure why, but who knows? because [00:08:00] things are gonna go back on this surface, um, and it's quite messy right now. It just needs a good cleaning. I'm gonna hit pause. I'm gonna go get some cleaning surpr supplies, and then I'll come right back and, um, get this space wiped down.
Okay, I am back with cleaning products.
Goodness, that's so loud. So I'm just gonna take a few minutes or a few seconds and, clean the sink.
So this bathroom's a little bit of an organizational challenge, um, because it doesn't have any sort of cabinet minus the, the sink, like the under sink area. So there's, or there's no like, closet in here, and the medicine cabinet is like one of those with the, the three little doors that open. so it's just, it's not super handy.
I have this, um. Oh, I don't know, what would you call it? Like a [00:09:00] crate that hangs on the wall that we keep towels in. And then the kids will sometimes put things on the top, like some of their hair products and stuff are on the top up there. So a lot of things wind up on the bathroom countertop.
I would love to get, like Ikea makes this peg board. System, and I would love to put that in the bathroom, but it's not completely plastic. It looks, it looks plastic, but I think it's like. A particle board or MDF is what some of it is made with. So I don't know how, how it would really hold up, but man, I think that would be really handy with some of the accessories that they have for the peg board, like for the kids toothbrushes and their, um, like their face products and their, their hair products, stuff like that.
I don't know. I'm thinking about it. Maybe that'll be a, a future, uh, podcast episode to talk about maybe putting something like that up. Okay. [00:10:00] So now that the sink is nice and clean, I'm just gonna kinda grab each of their products and make sure everything is, you know, make sure nothing's empty that I could throw away.
And I'm just gonna kinda keep it together by what it is. So hair stuff. And then there, toothbrush The water pick has to be on one particular side because that's where the outlet is.
Okay, so I'm gonna put the other water. Pick the one that appears to be broken. I'm gonna move it to the side so we can check that out later. I'm gonna ask the kids about the cups. I think the Tumblr just somebody you know, had a drink and. Didn't take it back into the kitchen. but the other one, I don't know if somebody uses it to rinse with or what.
All right. I need to find out about the electric toothbrush. Honestly, though, it's quite nasty. It's clear that nobody's using it. I'm sure we're [00:11:00] getting rid of that.
now what I have, I have some loose items here. I have some of the water pick accessories. And it looks like, you know, we're gonna have to figure out if the one water pit can be salvaged, and if it can't, then we probably just need to get rid of the accessories that go with it. okay. There's also a spray bottle in here that appears to be empty, so I'm gonna take it out of the bathroom.
It doesn't need to be in here. And I'm gonna put it either under the kitchen sink or in the closet in the living room where other things like that live. So next I'm gonna tackle this, um, crate that I told you is attached to the wall where the, to towels live. So there's a couple of big, like there's a big thing of like hair paste.
Up there, but honestly I think it just needs to live there because it's too big to live any place else. Um, another thing of hair gel and then somebody's [00:12:00] got their razor and their shaved gel. Actually, I kind of think all that just makes sense to live there. So that was easy. I'm not gonna mess with that.
I think I'm gonna go ahead and tackle, the medicine cabinet.
So, to do this, I'm gonna go ahead and pull everything out. And group it by type. So the categories that I'm making, I'm doing one for dental stuff,
um, one for face stuff, one for hair stuff. if I'm coming across things that are empty, I'm just tossing those items.
Honestly, I don't even know what some of this is.
They're like all these little things. Oh, I think these little pieces must go to this water pick, man. That's a lot of pieces though. Why would there be so many pieces? Hmm.
I've got a little Ziploc baggie for some of these water pick accessories and these, [00:13:00] there's these little like bead like looking things and I'm just gonna put those in there so that they don't get lost because I do think they go to the water pick.
There's just some trash in here. there's some sort of cord. I don't know what this cord goes to. Oh my goodness. I hate coming across cords because I just don't know what they to, oh, you know what? I bet it's to this electric shaver. That makes sense. Well, that's not as bad then. I'm putting the water pick that belongs to the broken.
I've got accessories that belong to the, the supposed broken water pick. Um, that water pick has its own little baggie for accessories, so I'm adding some things to that. Man, I, there are just so many little, little pieces to things that I just don't know what in the world they could possibly go to, unless it's the water pick, like I said. So, okay. I'm just adding these things to the water pick bin or little [00:14:00] baggy. At least this stuff will be contained.
Both my kids are currently in braces, so we've got two like packs of, things that came from the orthodontist with the little floss things they're supposed to use, which I guarantee you they don't use. Which is why we bought the water picks. And it looks like there's some supplies for the electric razor. Just about cut myself. That's smart.
There are like these little lid things. I don't know what they're for. Is it like a toothbrush cover? Is that what this is? No, A toothbrush doesn't fit in there. Okay. I don't know. I'm gonna have to ask the kids what that is. What those things are.
Well, I did this a little bit backwards because the medicine cabinet shelves can definitely use a good. Wiping, uh, down. So I may end up having to do the, the seat top again, but that's okay.
I usually start, you know, if I'm like cleaning stuff, I start at the top, but since I [00:15:00] decluttered starting at the bottom, little catty wampus tonight, and that's okay.
got all those shells wiped down.
the kids also, each of them have a, what do you call 'em, like an egg timer or I'm sure this is from the orthodontist as well. Showing how long you're supposed to brush your teeth. We're getting rid of those, Um, looks like there's some extra toothpaste in here, but that's okay because it's just extra for when they need it. So that's fine.
my preference would be for most of their stuff to live. In the medicine cabinet, but it's just not practical. I know that's not what's gonna happen, so I'm not even gonna fight it. There's no, no sense in that. you know how it is. The less stuff you have on a surface, the easier it is to clean and you don't have to, shuffle things around and do all that business.
I wish this electric razor, would stand up, but it doesn't. I think I'm gonna get a baggie for the accessories that go with it. [00:16:00] Oh. Or you know what? I've got some little bins. I'm gonna, that's what I'll do. That's easier. That way he doesn't have to like, undo the baggie and then put things back in if they're wet or whatever.
So I will get my little container that he can use for that. We are constantly clogging the drains with hair because we have a lot of hair in this family, like really thick hair. and so we've got some like, um, so what is it? A bathtub hair catcher. So we've got a few extras of those. I'm putting those back in the cabinet.
I've got, I do have a couple things that I need to ask the kids whether or not they want some, a few things. I wanna double check on toothbrushes to see looks like we have more toothbrushes than we have people, so I wanna see if there's something we can get rid of there. I need to check on the little water pick.
I'm sorry. I'm just kind of going through a, a mental list of things that I wanted to remember that I need to do. Yeah, there is a lot of stuff that got decluttered out of [00:17:00] this little bathroom. That's great. So, um, I decluttered a lot of the, shampoos, conditioners and body washes that we're no longer using, all of the wipes that don't need to be in the bathroom. And I don't even know if we need 'em at all, to be honest.
Um, although it's probably not a bad thing to have, especially for the cars, sometimes you just need like a wet wipe. I've got some things that like go back into the kitchen, the spray bottle that was empty, um, and then a few things of trash of, and then I need to empty the trash can 'cause it's crazy overflowing.
When you do a project in a room, remember you do not have to do the entire room at one time. You could break it down into category, you could break it down into section. you know, it just happened to work out that tonight Yes, this bathroom does have a lot of stuff, but the under sink area was pretty easy.
And then the medicine cabinet was a lot easier than I thought it was gonna be. [00:18:00] So, you know, but if I needed to based on time or energy or motivation level or whatever, I could definitely have, broken it down into a much smaller, decluttering task.
I'm really pleased with what I got decluttered in this space. Um, I think it's gonna function a little bit better. It was great to get the it, you know, get everything wiped down and. have a, a, a new place to keep the extra toilet paper so that it doesn't get lost in the back. Um, and now we just have the things that we actually use and that feels really good.
